And so my friends, I must come to the realisation that setting up a market is well outside the parameters of time and energy that I have right now. So many hurdles - too many for me to get over right now.

This is my last post from this blog. BUT, this is not my last post!

My new venture is in ladies clothing under my label 'CosyCosy' and you can find me at my new blog from here in.

The market has been an amazing ride. I've met so many wonderful people and I count myself so blessed for having been introduced to them!

For months I have been tucked away, snugly enjoying my quiet life in the country.

But today, something awakened within me. I don't know if it was my anticipation of my visit to Niche, the gorgeous, sunny day or just a general feeling of wellbeing deep within. Possibly all three.

I woke up and decided it was time. I have that itching, gnawing feeling and I can't make it go away. Time to seriously get market venue negotiating and find a date. Maybe even a Christmas market??

A change is in the air...

I am a strong believer that if something is not the way you want it to be, you keep making changes until it is.

Lots of changes for Homespun this week. As if moving house and going back to work wasn't enough. Now Homespun is in the firing line.

Moving House

I'm sorry I've been a bit quiet of late, we're moving house.

Going from a newish and large 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 living area home in semi-suburbia to a little 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom, no dishwasher!! house in the country. 'No dishwasher' just reverbs around my head!

I'm looking forward to less cleaning and less mess (surely a smaller house will not attract as much clutter as a large house, no?), a simpler lifestyle and a lovely backyard for the kids. And a trampoline.

I'll miss our neighbours like crazy, we have the best neighbourhood. But we'll be back in a couple of years when Nick is posted back to town again.

Clarence Point went off today - the people came, and came and came and come...

Congratulations to Robin and the Point of Women crew for putting on such a fantastic event. There was a lovely range of stalls, great food and masses of people.

As per usual I didn't get around to taking a photo... sorry...

Clarence Point Market Tomorrow

"Clarence Point?" I hear you say, "Where the heck is Clarence Point?!"

Basically its past Beaconsfield on the road to Greens Beach. If you get to Kelso, you've gone too far. About a 35 minute drive out of Launceston. And a picturesque drive too. If you've never been this way down the Tamar, take the scenic routes along Rosevears Drive to Exeter and then through Gravelly Beach and Deviot to the Batman Bridge then back to Beaconsfield. You wont be disappointed! Allow an extra 15 minutes for the scenic route.

This little market features stallholders from the Tamar Valley. There are about 35 stalls inside and outside at the Clarence Point hall (no directions required, Clarence Point isn't that big!).

As well as yours truly with her wrap skirts, you will be able to pick up turned timber bowls, childrens' accessories, homemade cakes and bikkies, jewellery, handbags and so much more stuff I have not a clue about.

This Good Friday, head out with the family to Clarence Point and while you're there you can take in the action of the Three Peaks Race too. A wonderful family outing!

Vintage Bebe Petit Sac

This week we're throwing vintage into the mix and having a little theme day!

We have Taritta along from Tilly Boo who makes the most divine little Pillowcase Dresses and the new Bebe Petit Sac (small baby bag) from recycled fabrics.

Vintage Pillowcase Dress/Top

Now here is a product that tickles my fancy, probably because I have a wee little child who requires nappies and wipes. I had this nappy bag that I dragged everywhere with the first child. Now I have two children and it just doesn't seem right to drag another bag around, so the nappies and wipes just get thrown into my massive, bottomless pit of a handbag.

Enter the Bebe Petit Sac:

The wipes go into one side and the nappies go into the otherside and then you fold it in half.

And it looks like this:

It just slips into your handbag, protecting the nappies and keeping them clean and keeping the wipes all together. Genius.

Development Application approved. YES! Whoo-hoo!

One annoying condition, that we have to reapply again in two years. Can't have it all our way, especially with LCC.

A radio adventure

After receiving a call from local radio station ABC Northern Tasmania yesterday morning, I was at the studio yesterday afternoon chatting live about the revoluation of handmade with none other than a real Notebook Magazine writer, Francesca Newby!

What an absolute honour to a) chat about handmade on the radio and b) chat about handmade with Francesca who had researched the topic and written for Notebook Magazine! Lucky me!!

The main focus of the discussion was about the popularity of handmade and how blogs and the internet have opened the doors to the world, taking us out of our traditional local environment and into a global local environment, opening up so many more opportunities for our crafting.

Francesca was knowledgeable and well spoken on the subject and I just added the Launceston view in relation to our market.

I am terribly sorry to have not gotten a photo of me in the studio, headphones on, chatting into the microphone... my baby brain forgets these things until I get home...

It's raining like crazy at our place. We're back from holidays. The rain was a good note to come home on - I would have felt depressed leaving on a day like yesterday!

So rain, keep coming today and tomorrow and all tomorrow night, and then stop at around 7am on Saturday morning just for 7 or 8 hours... please?

The Beach

We've had two days at Greens Beach and we're loving it!

At seven months, Poison Ivy hasn't quite gotten the hang of smiling on cue and at two and a half, the H-Bomb just couldn't hold that smile any longer when the little one finally did look up!

The weather has been lovely and it looks like we're in for much more of it. Bring it on!

Tomorrow I might even post something about handmade and markets... maybe.

At the Shack

We're having a spur of the moment holiday.

Our friend's shack at Greens Beach was unexpectedly vacated and Nick just started 4 weeks of annual leave so we packed up the girls and the dogs and headed off.

Now there are shacks and there are shacks if you know what I mean. Shacks that are on par or better than your humble abode or shacks that are just that - little shanties.

The shack we're at is a little shanty, a throw back to the 1970s. I am dying to share some pictures with you!

this is the lighting in the kitchen - the wallpaper is nearly cool again

and remember these doorbells?! we had one at home...

and take in that wallpaper in the bedroom! if it was reno'd it would be a keeper for sure!

and the centrepiece in the living area including that great lamp and the original shagpile carpet... how about that for quality!

We have been here 24 hours and are settling in and relaxing already. It's so generous of our friends to let us use this little relic! The best thing about it is the golf course setting and just 5 minutes flat walk to the beach. Aaaahhhhh, we might not come home... for a while anyway.

Alas, there is a market next weekend that I must be in town for...

Five Saturdays in January = No Market this Weekend

Our new operating days of the second and fourth Saturdays of the month is kind of fortnightly, but occasionally not.

So no market this weekend.

We are on again on Festivale weekend, 13th February. We'll hopefully take advantage of lots of visitors to town and add to the festival atmosphere.

A good omen from the Council maybe...

After reading through all the fine print from our previous application, the Council are right and I was confused - the process we went through last time took 7 months and was very confusing. So many different levels of Council and processes. As it goes, I had no option but to reapply, pay the fee again and now wait. All being well we wont get any opposition as this will slow our application considerably.

Today the Launceston City Council granted us permission to continue to trade whilst our Development Application is being assessed.

Thank you LCC for your generous decision.

Hopefully just the first of more good news to follow...

Announcing Market Theme Days in 2010

Our Development Application is yet to be approved but we are being optimistic and going ahead as though it is going to be approved without any hitches (please cross all your fingers and toes!).

To mix it up a little this year, as well as our regular market (which is great!) we thought we should do some special days where we have a focused theme for that day. Some of our theme days will include stalls that are not handmade. Our application to the Council includes the proposal of not more than 30% of stalls with a non-handmade content with not more than one theme day per month. Non-handmade stalls will be stictly vetted to ensure the a high standard of quality in both the product and presentation.

Here is the calendar of our theme days for 2010:

13th March 2010 - Vintage Fun Day - What a theme to start with! Vintage is just so groovy at the moment, how could I resist. What we're looking for is anything vintage be it clothing, shoes, jewellery, homeware, toys, whatever fits in the vintage theme and is not bric-a-brac. Fine line, I know, but we need to be different from whats on offer at other markets.

8th May 2010 - Woolly and Warm Day - Winter has arrived and we need cosy, warm wool. Knitted, crocheted, spinning wheels, anything whatsoever to do with wool. Heck, we might even go all out and bring in some sheep!

26th June 2010 - Kids Alive! Day - Get those kids out of the house in the middle of winter and get them down to the market for a day filled with fun and kids stuff. Stalls offering all kinds of things for kids as well as fun entertainment for kids.

28th August 2010 - Textiles and Fibres Day - a day for all of those mad sewing buffs, tie-dyers, silk weavers, fabric lovers, clothing designers, anything at all to do with textiles.

9th October 2010 - Go Green, Go 'Re' Day - a chance for all of those recycle, reuse, re words to come out and about and converge at Homespun.

27th November 2010 - A Handmade Yuletide - a huge bumper Christmas market. Start planning now as we'd love to see anything to do with Christmas at this market. Decorations, cards, gifts, wrapping, food, the works!

Our lovely postman stopped at the letterbox at around 10.30am this morning. He's so nice. We were outside and he stopped his bike, turned it off and had a little chat just like he always does when we're around.

He gave us the mail and went on his way.

There was one for me in a Launceston City Council envelope. A reminder that a new development application must be lodged with the LCC including a little fee to go along with it of around $600. I paid this fee the first time I lodged the application and the Council put a 6 month trial period stipulation on it. When there were no formal (or informal for that matter) objections and no follow up from the Council after this period, I thought we were ok to trade on.

So now this letter states:
"There is no information on Council records indicating that a new development application has been lodged. Until such time that a new application is approved by Council, the Civic Homespun Market must cease operating immediately.
Any further operation of this market will result in Council seeking immediate legal action."

Thanks Launceston City Council. I must now spend all weekend writing another development application for an existing market that has proven to build Launceston's reputation among tourists, livens the central city on an otherwise dull day and brings together artists and craftspeople to exhibit in their home town. And to boot, I must pay you for the priviledge of rubber stamping it to say that it's ok after all.

Do you know what? I don't mind writing the application again, its the fee to which I object.

I know that the market hobart and handmade hobart, both in similar buildings within central city boundaries didn't have to jump through these costly and time consuming hoops.

It makes me wonder whether I should cut my losses, close the market, take my stock and go market hopping in other cities in Tas and interstate every other weekend. One thing is for sure: I will make money doing that.

'Poison' Ivy and Harriet, the 'H-Bomb'

I'm having a little holiday. Not going anywhere. Not doing anything special. Just not doing anything. Noice.

I must be honest, and admit that today, I did go and do a little stocktake of my skirts to find out how many I need to sew next week. Probably shouldn't have done that... The answer is too many. More than I can sew in a week. Do you know what that means? I sold 18 skirts in the two weeks prior to Christmas! Good-ness me!

And so my holiday is ruined, momentarily, because I realise that I need to restock and I need to start this week if I'm going to hold a full compliment of stock for the 9th January market. Maybe I'll just take orders until I can rebuild my stock.

So back to my holiday. I've been relishing the extra time with my littlies, pictured above. The H-Bomb, at two and a half, has been an absolute gem over Christmas. She cracks me up all the time with her endless chatter and funny quips. She doesn't miss a trick. Poison Ivy, now 6 months, is a little stunner with a huge grin that she dishes out readily. She loves her big sister and when she starts getting around I'm sure she'll be a little shadow.

Here she is pictured in the beepbeep sling I bought recently. This is her fave spot at the moment. She sits up in it and tries to grab everything in arms reach. She drops off to sleep with the movement and loves being close to mum. She is such a mummy's girl.

Well, better get back to doing... nothing. Aaaah... holidays.

Our final market for 2009 certainly went off with a bang!

A few hiccups with another function on-site meant that all of our outside stalls had to be shifted to the footpath in front of the hall. Whilst this was just a temporary measure for the day I think it ended up being quite successful and only added to the atmosphere at the market.

Pity the Council wouldn't agree...

The laneway looked its best with Rocky Gardens, Four Seasons Herbs, Country Hot Potatoes and Lees Orchards showing their wares.

Our inside stalls went off without a hiccup and all looked great. My photography efforts didn't stretch that far thanks to Poison Ivy and her bad day. I also missed getting a photo of the little choir that turned up to do some busking and the gorgeous little boy with his violin! They sounded so awesome!

With the beautiful weather, the great crowd and wonderful offerings from our stalls, we had a lovely day all round.

busy, busy, busy

one weekend... two markets

First it was the Homespun Market on Saturday.

Where did all of those people come from??! It was a huge day - 18 inside and 9 outside stalls and lots and lots of patrons.

Then, on Sunday, it was up with (or quite possibly before) the sparrows and off to Hobart for the market.

Another great day! We were stoked with the awesome antique hat and coat stand that was provided to us and also our position close to the 'secret toilet' come fitting room with a great mirror!

We were intrigued with all the amazing chairs and cupboards and so many of those hat stands and secret rooms and cctv and intercoms and gizmos and gadgets in this amazing venue - the Masonic Temple. We felt very naughty having a little poke around and came away with more questions about the use of the facility than answers. Very interesting.

our 'point of sale counter' consisted of a little stand that we found right behind our stall that held our carry bags beautifully and we brought down our own trunk as our 'table'

We sold some skirts and had a good look around this lovely market. It is held on the first Sunday of each month and is run by three amazing ladies. The halls looked really lovely with good lighting, a free-flowing layout and excellent signage.

I'm now absolutely stuffed but about to get into an order taken from yesterday so that I can get it in the mail tomorrow.

A Handmade Christmas

I took a little 'me time' last weekend after the market and jumped on the plane to Melbourne for a couple of days. Little H-Bomb stayed behind with Grandma and Grampsie, and Poison Ivy, who is still being breast-fed, came along with me for the ride.

Trips to Melbourne normally encompass a huge amount of shopping, especially the pre-Christmas trip. But do you know what? I spent more at the last two Homespun Markets than I did in Melbourne.

This Christmas is a handmade Christmas.

We are soooo lucky this week to have Annie from Red Bamboo Handmade Things at the market!

Annie moved down from sunny, warm Queensland to cold, changable Tassie with her hubby and two cats nearly one year ago. She was entrenched in the markets up there too with a regular gig at Designers Emporium which is now Boutique Markets.

We first met Annie a few months ago at our September market. Wow, were we impressed with her gorgeous soaps, lotions, lip balms and soy candles and melts, all beautifully packaged!

I finally came to acquire a couple of Annie's products a few weeks ago and I am hooked! The scents are amazing! I've been keeping them with my Christmas present stash in the formal lounge which is closed up most of the time. I now regularly just pop my head in and take a whiff and mmmmmm! it smells so good!

Annie is back at the market this week with a small range of her wonderful products. She'll be flanked by a few friends including our favourite journal maker, Isis.

We at Civic Homespun Market love new stalls! We are most honoured when someone chooses to make our market the stepping stone for their next big venture.

The thing I like most about littlejomm is that it caters amazingly well for little boys. I have 2 girls and have no difficulty in coming home with something for them after every market! But boys are a little more difficult to shop for so I'm told by friends with boys. These guys have girls' tops too, but they have a great range of boys stuff.

After an initial busy start to the market, the people all left us and obviously found themselves a good little posie from which to view the Christmas Parade.

We were sitting there all depressed thinking, "have we seen the best of it?", "is it going to get any better today?".

Well, the Christmas Parade finished, which coincided with the rain stopping, and the sun showing us its glorious rays and the people came, and they came, and they came.

Pity I ran around all day like a mad woman and didn't get any photos... sorry.

We had some absolutely beautiful new stalls today too. Next week I'll post some photos of some awesome new stuff that we have leading up to Christmas.

Chocolates in Bloom is a new little business run by mum of one, Nicole Hall.

This boutique business sprung up out of Nicole's creative side and the need to give her brain a change from mothering... strikes a chord with me!

The basic concept of Chocolates in Bloom is a box or bunch of chocolates. A great idea as a novel alternative for a bunch of flowers! Beautiful to look at and then you can eat it!

Nicole has put together a range of boxes for Christmas.

Wouldn't this one look great as a centrepiece on your table for Christmas lunch! Or a lovely little Christmas tree for those with limited space.

Kylie has recently transformed her stock from beaded jewellery into scrapbooked cards, albums and gifts.

Kylie is a manager at a tyre retailer during her weekday hours. She has 3 teenage children who keep her busy.

In her spare time, Kylie loves to make things with paper. She has a little studio in the shed at the back of the garden and retreats there for her 'me time'.

a block of chocolate is no longer a boring gift... what a great idea!

'Me time' is obviously a creative and productive time for Kylie as she comes out with these special products.

We're going big-time and running a TV campaign!

Ok, so in my other job with a national company from which I'm currently on maternity leave, we'd call it a TVC (television campaign).

We'd get an info pack through our intranet site including a 20 page speccy powerpoint presentation showing the market research and charts with our goals at what percentage we'll grow our business during this campaign and a heap of text and showy pictures. All of this will justify to our big bosses who sign off on our spend that we need this TVC.

At the Homespun Market, I have used a very complicated equation to decide our advertising for this year. It goes something like this: market open(few know about it/not much traffic through the door)/little time to do cheap marketing = must let maximum people know that we're open by using mass media in a TVC!!!

Just in case you're not a maths wizz (I once was, but having 2 babies has stolen quite a few of my brain cells!), we are open, we don't have enough people coming through, and I need a way to get people in the door in a short period of time.

Look out for our advert on Southern Cross TV. We are running the ads on Wed-Fri for the next 6 weeks from this Wednesday.

Sarah & Carley - cute little children's hair accessories, warm wraps and gorgeous ballerina tutus for little girls. Also, pick up a calendar for Grandma for Christmas that you can add your own family photos for a personal touch.

Shaz & Mary - our talented knitters who have shown us that knitted stuff is not only for winter! last time they had outstanding knitted bracelets with a cute flower that I just had to have and am very impressed with! Of course, they have the usual hats and gloves and stuff too in lovely colours.

One of our regular stallholders is inner+child.

Stallholders Rachael and Cath share this stall with their individual little treats of children's homewear and accessories.

Rach sews lovely cushions and cute kid-size aprons.

Cath makes very gorgeous felt accessories. Hairclips, brooches, rings, headbands and mobiles in birds, flowers, apples and mushrooms.

Cath's latest product is the most gorgeous little fairy wings for darling little girls. The wings are sewn onto a t-shirt and can be worn as a very cute every-day kind of top or as a dress up - whatever you feel is appropriate. My own little H-bomb (2 years old) owns one and it generally doesn't make to it the cupboard. It's either on her or in the wash! She loves it. I let her wear it as a top and she is an absolute darling in it :) I am a little biased!

If you have a little girl you simply must check out the very gorgeous, easily washable and easy wearable fairy tops.

eco savvy, marketing savvy or both...?

so i had an idea ages ago. what's new? i have so many ideas locked up in my little head that they're bottled necked and only trickle to fruition. that's the romantic way of saying: lots of talk and little action! mostly just no time though.

well this idea was to have eco friendly shopping bags to give away as part of a promotion and to use at the market.

a few weeks ago i received a phone call from an organisation asking me to advertise and provide an offer. well, i thought, jump in the deep end and do it!

long story short, i found some cheaper bags (they are soooo expensive!!) that were on special as a last one kind of thing and bought 500 of them. i looked into getting them printed with my logo at the same time and it was $2 extra - per bag!!!

so i got my diy=save money hat on and googled.

i found some transfer paper at an online site that you can print yourself from your home printer and then iron onto your thingo. i bought some calico at my least favourite, most potential shop, spotlight and wacko, i set myself a task and saved around $1.30 per bag.

so here they are. 11 down, 489 to go.

A Little Denim Skirt For Ivy

So I just couldn't resist... A friend gave me the cute little Bonds leggings when Ivy was born, but what would she wear them with? Big sister Harriet was a trouser girl (and mostly still is!) - not as feminine-looking as Ivy in the early months - hard to admit - because we thought she was just the most beautifullest child in the whole world!! So the hand-me-down clothes didn't contain a skirt or dress in size 000.

I decided that I would make little Ivy a denim skirt. I pulled out some denim I had in my ever so dwindling stash (I don't get out much to randomly fabric shop these days!!) and one of my six boxes of little bits and pieces of fabric. You know the little bits that you just can't bear to throw out after cutting out a pattern, not big enough to sew something else, but you might use it one day... Low and behold, I had cut off the legs of an old pair of jeans once and, what do you know, perfect for a little size 000 skirt! No cutting and measuring and sewing all day, just two quick hems, a bit of elastic and voila!

It was looking a little plain, so I added this little fabric circle and button detail that I had been dreaming about for days.

Are they set for mass production and a target audience of Homespun Market goers? Maybe, you (and I) never just know what I might get up to on any one day...

a successful day at 'the market' hobart

Cath Reilly and myself had the pleasure of attending 'the market' hobart, a new monthly handmade market in Hobart.

Located at the Masonic Temple on Sandy Bay Road, 'the market' is a credit to its founders, Bec, Holly and Shannon. A wonderful array of quality, handmade items were on display. The venue looked amazing with the lighting detail and market set up.

Cath and I combined forces for the day, with Cath peddling her gorgeous range of felt items for children and I trialled my new range of frayed denim bibs (I will upload them on the website this week!!).

The market was well attended and we were kept busy for most of the day.

Winter Season Commences 9th May 2009

I am pleased to announce that we will be trading for the first winter market on 9th May 2009.

We will continue to trade once per month on every second Saturday over the winter months. Cost of a stall over the winter period is $25 per table.

The following dates will be the market dates for winter:

9th May 2009
13th June 2009
11th July 2009
8th August 2009
12th September 2009

We will re-commence our weekly summer season on 17th October 2009.

Dates after 9th May are subject to the Launceston City Council approving our development application, which shouldn't be an issue, but you never know.
